If you're a kid these days, seems like owning a video game console is pretty much a given. That sentiment is backed up by a recent survey by Pew Research Center, which found 80 percent of U.S. participants between the ages of 12 and 17 own a gaming console (via MSNBC).

The survey was conducted by telephone as part of the Internet & American Life Project, and found that 89 percent of young males own or have access to a console. Girls at a similar age come in at 70 percent.

The survey also showed 56 percent of males and 47 percent of females owning a Nintendo DS or PSP. Ownership also drops for older teens, with 44 percent of those aged 14 - 17 owning a handheld compared to 66 percent for kids aged 12 and 13.
