MORE than 9,700 dodgy DVDs were seized after a raid at a quiet village car boot sale.

Glen Smith had 574 counterfeit DVDs and 245 CDs on his stall in August last year

After a search of his home police seized 4,553 counterfeit DVDs and 2515 CDs.

They also removed 2,095 counterfeit pornographic DVDs and 16 depraved hardcore movies.

This week at St Albans Crown Court the 38-year-old pleaded guilty to three charges of selling counterfeit DVD, three of selling counterfeit CDs and 16 charges of possessing extreme pornography.

Three police officers from the Hatfield Neighbourhood team have had training in identifying counterfeit goods and they have access to specialist companies who can spot a copy from a fake.

Working alongisde the British Phonographic Institute (music) and Federation against Copyright Theft (FACT) they led the case against him.

Smith, of Cranston Gardens, Chingford, Essex, is due to be sentenced next month.

Xavier Gens burst onto the scene with Frontiere(s) a couple years ago. Since then he went to Hollywood to make Hitman and hasn’t been doing much in the horror genre. Now he is making a somewhat return in his new film the Divide. Today the official site for studio ContentFilm gave us a very small look at the art along with a very lengthy synopsis you can read below:

THE DIVIDE is a high concept post-apocalyptic thriller that opens with pandemonium and a chaotic sprint towards the basement of a new York apartment building, just moments before the city outside is decimated…

When a cataclysmic explosion devastates new York, eight strangers take refuge in the basement of their apartment building, a converted fallout shelter designed by their paranoid superintendent Mickey. With just three connecting rooms it’s barely big enough, but with stockpiles of food and water, the group are at least safe from the horrors outside, and they settle in and attempt to fathom the catastrophe that has ended the lives of so many of their loved ones.

But suddenly men in HAZMAT suits storm their shelter and open fire. the strangers join forces in a desperate bid to take on this enemy, with no-one understanding what these HAZMATS are looking for, and what drives them to be so merciless.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 27, 2006 — Superman is set to return to movie theaters nationwide this week, but is this latest incarnation of the quintessential American hero an enemy of traditional values? With millions of children nationwide eagerly anticipating the new Superman film, this is the question being asked by the author of a popular series of kid’s books.

Katharine DeBrecht, author of the picture book "Help! Mom! Hollywood’s in My Hamper" (Kids Ahead; hardcover: .95; ISBN 0976726912), warns that the movie "Superman Returns" appears to undermine traditional values. Early reviews of the film — which have generally been positive — have stated that Lois Lane has a child out of wedlock and that the five-year-old boy might be Superman’s son.

"Liberals in the media and classrooms are already making it hard for parents who believe in traditional values to pass on those morals to their kids," says DeBrecht, a mother of three. "Now it looks like Superman will also be working against us. Reports indicate that not only does the movie imply that Superman and Lois Lane had a child together, but it also has Lois engaged to another man, causing Superman to compete for her affection."

"Portraying Superman with an out-of-wedlock child and potentially breaking up a family is completely unnecessary," adds DeBrecht. "Warner Brothers is marketing this movie to children. It has dozens of toy, clothing, cereal, and fast-food tie-ins. But parents taking their children to see this movie need to be ready to talk with them about it, because Lex Luthor is not the only bad guy in this script."

This is not the first time that author DeBrecht has taken on the opponents of traditional values. Her debut book, "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed" (Kids Ahead; hardcover; ISBN 0976726904), garnered national attention last fall for its portrayal of Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy as cartoon villains who fight against the American Dream by taxing and regulating a lemonade stand run by two young brothers. The illustrated book hit #1 on the Barnes & Noble website while also drawing fiery criticism from a long list of liberals, including Alan Colmes, Ron Reagan, and Hillary Clinton’s press secretary.

This spring, DeBrecht unveiled "Hollywood’s in My Hamper," an illustrated book which uses look-alikes of Barbra Streisand, Tom Cruise, Britney Spears and Madonna to teach kids not to emulate the celebrities they see on television and in the movies. And with Superman fathering kids and trying to break up engagements, will Clark Kent join Babs and Britney in future "Help Mom" books?

"Superman used to stand for truth, justice, and the American way," adds DeBrecht. "But parents need to beware because evidently director Bryan Singer has turned the Man of Steal into a deadbeat dad."

One of the biggest problems with "Knight and Day" was that it appealed largely to an older audience, either because younger moviegoers have little interest in a sophisticated "North by Northwest"-style thriller or because Cruise and Diaz have even less of a following among younger moviegoers than anyone had imagined. According to reporting by my colleague Ben Fritz, under-25 moviegoers made up 44% of the film's opening weekend audience, a figure that doesn't bode well for the film, since even fewer younger moviegoers will be available after the new "Twilight" film opens Wednesday. 

In the summer, adult moviegoers rarely drive the box office, especially when your film skews as old as "Knight and Day" did and receives decidedly mixed reviews. "If you're over 40, this movie was a rock star — the whole concept, the Nick and Nora of it all," says Sella. "It's a grown up film. that was the whole theory behind selling the film, that it was a cool, adult movie, hence the poster and the graphics behind it. We wouldn't have called it 'Knight and Day' if we weren't going for an adult audience. I guess that if I'm guilty of anything, it's that I always believed an adult movie could work, even in the summer."

But why didn't the young moviegoers come too? Sella falls silent. "Honestly, I don't know," he said. "I've still got to try and figure that out." He dismissed complaints about the film's title, arguing that titles, good or bad, are overrated. "If there are three words that you should never put in any title, its 'Dead Poet's Society,' and yet that film was a huge success. Titles really don't hurt movies, and for that matter, I don't know what else we could have called it. What we were up against was bigger than that."

Frankly, no one knows for sure what kept moviegoers away from "Knight and Day." even if the film had a lousy title and a questionable release date, it's easy to name dozens of films that have triumphed over those factors, just as it's easy to name dozens more films that had unbelievably enticing titles and a perfect release date — and still went down in flames. If Angelina Jolie opens "Salt," a July 23 action thriller that looks eerily like "Wanted," her last action thriller, then we'll have to wonder if Cruise and Diaz really have completely lost their drawing power. And if "Salt" is a disappointment, then perhaps people will cast a wider net, saying that movie stars are even more overrated than ever before, or argue that action thrillers are dead — at least until the next one that comes along has a terrific opening.

It's why Hollywood loves to play the blame game. In a business where there are no infallible filmmakers, where audiences are perpetually fickle, blowing hot and cold over every fresh new actor or hot new trend, the only constant is that our movies are our most enigmatic consumer product of all, their appeal a perpetual mystery. All we know is that something was missing from the witches' brew represented by "Knight and Day," something that even a savvy marketer like Sella is still having trouble figuring out.

It's why movie marketers are often a little tightly wound. The ground is always shifting under their feet. Slam dunks are for basketball. Home runs are for baseball. when it comes to the movies, you could lose an awful lot of money betting on a sure thing.

After many years of searching for the perfect husband to no avail, all that Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) can hear is the horrible ticking of her biological clock. Determined to fulfill her dream of becoming a mother, Zoe decides to take matters into her own hands and go it alone. Much to Zoe's surprise, her search for the right man comes to an end sooner than she expected, when she meets Stan (Alex O'Loughlin), a charming goat farmer, on the way home from her artificial insemination. As Stan and Zoe begin to form a relationship, Zoe fears that she'll scare him away if she tells him about her pregnancy. Much to her surprise, Stan commits to Zoe and her expectant baby.

Stan and Zoe's relationship is put to the test, as they must deal with all of the baby preparations, late-night cravings, mood swings, and doctor's appointments. Even after they learn that she is expecting twins, Stan's commitment to Zoe remains steadfast. Zoe soon realizes that trust is an important foundation in every committed relationship and she learns that she must trust that Stan's love and commitment to her and the twins is genuine and that he will see their relationship through good times and bad times.

Positive Elements

Zoe is a kind person and her desire for a family and genuine excitement about motherhood is refreshing. Her maternal ways can be seen in the manner that she cares for her old dog, who needs a doggie wheelchair in order to get around.

Stan's unwavering commitment to Zoe and the well being of the twins is another positive aspect of this film. Stan is fully willing to take on all of the responsibilities of fatherhood and tries very hard to learn as much as he can about being a good father and eventually husband. His patience and compassion towards Zoe during her pregnancy is refreshing.

One of the best aspects of "The Back-up Plan" is the lesson that comes at the end of the film, as Stan finally gets to the heart of why Zoe is not married and decided to go it alone as a single mother. We soon realize that Zoe thinks she is going to get hurt again and is afraid that Stan will eventually leave her. Zoe's mistrust of men is also rooted in her parent's failed marriage, as she witnessed her father walk out on her mom when her mom became terminally ill. Zoe eventually learns that trust is one of the most important foundations of a healthy relationship and she must trust that Stan is committed to her and the twins no matter what.

I think that Zoe's trust issues and fear of commitment is reflective of many men and women's fears about relationships and marriage, especially in a society where many relationships are fleeting, divorce rates are climbing, and the media would have us believe that marriage is becoming something of the past. Like so many people today, Zoe also lost faith in marriage, so in her mind it was easier and less painful to go it alone and start a family by herself. Stan's commitment and love for Zoe reminds the audience that relationships can still stand the test of time and that having a baby and raising a child is a wonderful gift that should take place within the confines of marriage and women should not "go it alone."

Objectionable Content

Even though the "The Back-up Plan" has a positive message about trust and commitment and has some genuinely funny moments, where we see Zoe's crazy food cravings and voracious appetite get the best of her, the sexual content in this film is quite heavy.

All of the scenes that take place at Zoe's doctor's office are far too biologically graphic. Without going into the awkward details, there is some very frank talk about the female anatomy and pregnancy. One or two anatomical terms are used to describe the male anatomy and several anatomical terms are used repeatedly to describe the female anatomy.

In typical Hollywood fashion, Stan and Zoe sleep together during one of their first dates and it is implied that they continue this type of relationship. Zoe and Stan kiss passionately in a couple of scenes and in one scene he rips open the back of her dress that is too tight for her and her bare back and bra strap are exposed.

In my opinion, this film should have received a warning for "brief partial nudity" in its rating due to two incidents. In one of scene, Zoe is complaining to Stan about gaining weight during her pregnancy and she tells him that her ‘behind' used to be smaller and we briefly see her from the back wearing only thong underwear. In another scene, Zoe and Stan attend a water birth and there are several revealing shots of the woman's lower body while she is delivering the baby.

The entire water birth scene was uncomfortable. Zoe and Stan end up getting harangued into attending the water birth of one of Zoe's rather strange "Single Mothers and Proud" group member's water delivery. There are a lot of New Age elements during this scene as one woman drums and others chant as she is having her baby.

Other negative elements include Zoe's friend, Mona (Michaela Watkins), a mother of four, who cannot understand why she so desperately wants to become a mother. Mona regales Zoe with horror stories about motherhood, telling her kids are "awful" and she describes in a rather crude manner what having kids does to your body.

"The Back-up Plan's" dialogue is littered with profanity. There are approximately 20 s-words and its derivatives. The Lord's name is misused over a dozen times and there is 1 use of the f-word (which was uttered in a church). Profanities such as a**, b**ch, d**n, d**che bag, and the like make their way into the film's dialogue as well. There is a lot of explicit sexual and biological talk regarding pregnancy throughout the film.

Zoe wears revealing outfits in several scenes, including cleavage-baring nightgowns, a short dress, and a backless shirt. Stan is seen shirtless driving a tractor around his farm.

Summary

While I ultimately like "The Back-up Plan's" message about the importance of commitment and trust in relationships, I cannot recommend this film due to its sexual content and graphic biological content regarding pregnancy.

Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez hits the big screen with her rom-com comeback in “The Back-Up Plan” since we saw her last in 2006’s “El Cantante” and “Bordertown”. She’s famed for her perfect figure, but in this movie, she’s curvier and more voluptuous than ever playing Zoe the pregnant pet store owner.

It’s light-hearted and the plot is pretty predictable, starting with Zoe (J. Lo) going to a sperm clinic for artificial insemination, thinking she’ll never find her Mr. Right. However, after the appointment, she meets someone new – Stan (Alex O’Loughlin) whom she eventually falls for. So the turmoil starts from here. Will the pregnancy tear them apart? Typical chick flick cliche will lead you to figure out what happens next soon enough.

J. Lo’s performance is good. She manages to pull out big emotions and various funny expressions in the movie, particularly a dramatic scene involving childbirth. Imagine our fabulous Jenny From The Block stuffing her face with food, burping, and peeing onscreen, – yes, you get to see it all in here! Her performance is easy to like, save for the times she looks too goofy with the comic acts.
Alex O’Loughlin (”The Invisible” 2007, “Whiteout” 2009) as Stan is simply too good to be true! Charming, charismatic, funny, romantic, physically strong – isn’t this a fairy tale of a man? It could be that this role is intentionally unbelievable to make the story work better but hey, at the end of the day, it’s a chick flick so what more can I say!

The character to go to for funny is definitely the bug-eyed dog, Nutsy, appearing here as Zoe’s handicapped pet with hind legs supported by a wheelie-cart. It totally steals the limelight of every scene it’s in, outshining even the human actors and making you fall in love with this loveable puppy. You can read that it actually took three completely healthy Boston Terriers to play Nutsy’s disabled dog character.

Most of the humour in the movie is overworked and exaggerated. However if you still haven’t outgrown these types of jokes, you’ll enjoy the film. “The Back-Up Plan” has decent entertainment value, with a steady flow of loud-out-loud moments for those who are open to them.

The Back-Up Plan (previously known as “Plan B”) is a romantic comedy film, starring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O’Loughlin.It was released in theaters in the US on April 23, 2010 and later in other regions.

Zoe (Lopez) cannot find the man of her dreams, but wants a child anyway. She undergoes artificial insemination. The same day she meets Stan (O’Loughlin) when they step into a taxi, both claiming to be first. She joins a mutual aid group of single pregnant women. Zoe and Stan fall in love, but Zoe does not tell him about the insemination. It turns out to be successful, she becomes pregnant, but only after some weeks she tells Stan about it. He is first angry that she did not tell him earlier, but later accepts it. He hangs around a children’s playing area to imagine how it is to be father, but is suspected to be a pervert; this is soon cleared up. Zoe turns out to be pregnant of twins. Due to a remark of Stan that the twins are not his, Zoe thinks he does not accept to become father of them, and breaks off the relationship. Later she wants to mend it, and Stan accepts.

There are so many problems here it's hard to know where to begin. The cast strains to create a tone of cuteness, which proves grating, while the number of odd circumstances that keep Zoe and Alex running into each other is insulting. Not only do they happen to stumble upon each other trying to nab the same cab, not once but twice, but they also randomly meet at a farmers market. I'm sure this happens in a city of nine million all the time. However, this perfectly matches the script, which is all over the place as well. There is a slapstick sequence involving fire, dirt and a water hose, a pregnant J-Lo trawling in a dumpster and a climax involving, you guessed it, a dramatic birth. These scenes speak to the depths to which The Back-Up Plan stoops.

It is nice to have Jennifer Lopez back in a romantic comedy and for the most part it is an acceptable vehicle for her. O'Loughlin is a wise choice as her leading man and the two of them make a compatible couple. You just wish the script was not as cutesy and clichéd as it is. This makes the film just an okay one rather than a thoroughly entertaining one like some of her past movies have been.

The Back Up Plan needed a back up script in which all the clichés had been eliminated and all the cuteness had been toned down a notch or two and only then it could have made a better view.

  Jennifer Lopez wasn’t the first choice of most weekend moviegoers.

The star’s The Back-Up Plan grossed a not great but not unexpected $12.3 million, per box office estimates, and settled for second behind the sturdy How to Train Your Dragon ($15 million).

Elsewhere, The Losers looked lost, while Jennifer Aniston left-and joined-the Top 10. More results:

Ladies, if you haven’t found “the one” and can’t shush your biological clock, relax — there’s a back-up plan. Like a schnauzer to a Snausage the surefire way to lure Mr. Right from wherever he’s been hiding is to settle for a bun in the oven without a baker man. At least, this is the plan according to the latest rom-com fairytale starring J-Lo (aka Jennifer Lopez).

Zoe (J-Lo) has done her darndest to create her own happiness. She traded her corporate job for a pet store gig to attain work-life balance. She outfits her adorable pink-wheelchair-pulling bulldog, Nutsy, in snappy tweed hats. Yet Zoe longs for a baby but hasn’t met the right man, and her pal Clive (Community’s Eric Christian Olsen) refuses her be-my-baby-daddy plea. So she does what women who don’t, as her Single Mothers and Proud support group says, “have a penis partner” do: She has Dr. Harris (Robert Klein) shoot sperm donor number whatever into her womb. Seconds later, rapturous despite a downpour, Zoe slides into a cab — and presto! — a stranger, Stan (Whiteout’s Alex O’Loughlin), appears. They bicker about who stole whose taxi and after the cabbie bails, Stan pursues Zoe and, spotting a penny on the pavement, tells her to pick it up because it’s good luck. It’s one of many lines he cockily woos her with, along with, “I’d be your best kiss” or “I know how to milk a goat — does that do anything for you?” (yes, it makes me think you associate sex with farm animals). And what guy wouldn’t go gaga for a gal who says things like “stupid head,” snorts chili like a sow, and around the third date reveals she’s preggers by an anonymous sperm donor? It’s so unbelievable it’s believable … right?

In Stan’s moony eyes, Zoe is the cutest, sexiest creature on the planet (except when she has chicken in her hair). Obviously, they were meant to be. After about four dates he’s ready to affectionately endure pregnancy symptoms (vomiting, sloppy eating) that seem to manifest mere days after her insemination. As the movie itself admits (which doesn’t excuse anything), it’s love fast-forward and backward. It’s also romance with all the sugary highs and little satisfying substance. Zoe and Stan have troubles, but they’re kooky rom-com mishaps and endearing difficulties that are easily resolved. The reality of sudden parenthood is simply fodder for the-horrors-of-parenting-and-childbirth humor, which ranges from turd surprises to the gleeful “guess what childbirth does to your bladder” warnings of Zoe’s friend Mona (SNL alum Michaela Watkins). Along with Maribeth Monroe’s hilariously horrifying birthing wail, Watkins offers rare comic relief; otherwise the movie resorts to misinterpretations of “bought the farm” and unsettling overexposure that includes pubic hair reflections and a glimpse of Lopez’s bare booty (the moment fans have been waiting for?), all the while exploiting the lovability of Nutsy, Tom Bosley of Happy Days, and Linda Lavin of Alice, who plays Zoe’s Nana, and who Zoe assures that Stan is “special, real, funny and different.”

Alas, The Back-Up Plan is none of those things. It’s everything you expect from a bad rom-com: a warped sense of relationship reality, a contrived tale about how life doesn’t go according to plan, and worse. And it’s all served up with a cloying cuteness that’s enough to cause an audience to do exactly as Zoe does at the film’s finale: throw up

          There’s an old saying that goes, “find a penny, pick it up; all day long, you’ll see Jennifer Lopez eat chili with her bare hands.” Maybe I don’t have that right, but neither does The Back-Up Plan — a gross-out yuck-fest disguised as a generic Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy. The image on the poster features Lopez playfully covering the eyes of her co-star Alex O’Loughlin, perhaps to spare him the carnival of vomit, feces, and vaginal blood that this movie mistakes for actual comedy writing.

I will give the filmmakers a little credit for not having the entire movie build up to the big moment where Lopez, as wealthy pet shop owner Zoe, reveals to her new beau, chiseled goat herder Stan (O’Loughlin), that she’s pregnant with a test tube baby. The film opens with her in the stirrups, longing to create a family she can call her own, but immediately afterward she meets Stan, a perfect fairy-tale prince of a man, who picks up pennies for good luck, makes his own cheese, plows with his shirt off, and dreams of owning his own sustainable food boutique in New York City.

You might assume that the film becomes a wacky comedy of errors, as Zoe tries to hide her pregnancy from Stan, while the two fall in love, leading to the time-tested “but I love you anyway” confession from Stan once he finds out he’s a surprise daddy to a kid he never expected. Strangely, that’s not what The Back-Up Plan has in store. Instead it becomes a female riff on Knocked Up, about a young couple’s struggles with impending parenthood, while the two are still in the brand new getting-to-know-you phase of their relationship.

The difference is that most of Knocked Up’s humor is verbal, while The Back-Up Plan’s is physical. Yes, you will get to see Lopez eat chili with her bare hands, but that’s only half as disgusting as a close-up on a pregnancy test sinking into a pile of fresh dog vomit. A scene in which Robert Klein, playing Zoe’s OB-GYN, shows off his blood-covered hands while repeating, “Vagina! Vagina! Vagina!” won’t have Judd Apatow losing any sleep, nor will the moment in which a stereotypical hippie-dippy lesbian on all fours defecates into a kiddie pool while giving birth and pulls J-Lo into the dirty water. How about the part where Anthony Anderson tries to identify the owner of a found turd?

The owner of this particular turd is CBS Films, who seem determined to mismatch huge movie stars with uninspired material. Jennifer Lopez in a gross-out comedy is as misguided an idea as Harrison Ford in a big-screen version of a disease-of-the-week flick (CBS’s first film was Extraordinary Measures, which our Jeff Anderson called “a lazy movie” in his review). The Back-Up Plan is also lazy, full of contrived emotional baggage for our heroine so that some measure of conflict can be forced into a conflict-free situation.

Stan is so over the moon for Zoe, that director Alan Poul and writer Kate Angelo struggle to find ways to create dramatic tension. They have Zoe push Stan away repeatedly, for no real believable reason (including his second-date confession that he attends night school — which somehow leads her to call him a liar and drive away in a huff), and by the third or fourth time she shows him the door, only for him to come back and apologize (for nothing), you wish he’d go away and stay away for his own good. Permanent separation is not really what you should want for the sexy young couple in a romantic comedy.

Poop is also not high on my list of things I want from a romantic comedy. I’ve certainly seen comedies that were more gross than The Back-Up Plan, and the real crime here is that for a gross-out comedy, The Back-Up Plan is still too sugar-sweet to back up its own vulgarity. Just showing me a pile of puke is not really its own joke, so why even show it? Is the mere concept that doo-doo exists enough to make me laugh? Hasn’t been for a very long time. The Back-Up Plan wants to be Knocked Up for the chick flick set, but an argument could be made that Knocked Up was already that movie for the chick flick set — it does star Katherine Heigl, after all. That leaves The Back-Up Plan struggling for a reason to exist, and, no, the two-second shot of Lopez in a thong is not enough of a reason.

Love Means Having to Say, ‘I Feel ..

It's hard to pinpoint when the American romantic comedy went into therapy, though you have to assume it was not long after filmmakers started hitting the couch, or at least cruising the self-help bookshelves. Once upon a studio time, romantic comedies involved a man and a woman engaged in delicate (or crude) power negotiations. The shrew had to be tamed and the boy had to grow up so he could handle her, or some variation on that idea. That template is still in use, though the banter that accompanied those negotiations has given way to speeches about feelings. Freud might have hit Hollywood decades earlier, but Woody Allen and the generations of funnymen and women he inspired, have a lot to answer for.

 Someone involved in the making of "The Back-Up Plan," a not very good and yet painless waste of time, has certainly thought through some life and love questions. Written by Kate Angelo and directed by Alan Poul, the movie is essentially a vehicle for Jennifer Lopez, an appealing screen presence with a disappointing big-screen track record. That's probably not all her fault: romantic roles for women often are the provenance of the bland or the blonde (Jennifer Aniston or Katherine Heigl) or the rare professional wisenheimer (Tina Fey). Angelina Jolie has a lock on the tough chick thing, something Ms. Lopez proved she could do beautifully in Steven Soderbergh's thriller "Out of Sight," her best movie to date.

"The Back-Up Plan" represents the first time that Ms. Lopez has headlined a movie since "El Cantante," a 2007 release about the salsa musician Héctor Lavoe that she made with her husband, Marc Anthony. As a consequence, "The Back-Up Plan" isn't just about a single woman, Zoe, who decides to have a baby on her own. It's also about how good Ms. Lopez looks after a few years off from the movies, during which she had twins and then - to judge from the many shots of her taut stomach, firm thighs and even a peek-a-boo look at her derrière - got back into shape. If you think that's an overstatement, consider that an entire scene involves a pregnant Zoe waxing rueful about her glorious posterior, as she brandishes a photo for evidence.

That's getting ahead of the story, though, which opens with Zoe being artificially inseminated in a fertility clinic by her jokey doctor (Robert Klein, of all people). Terminally single if not really a lonely New York gal, Zoe owns a small pet store, has a wee disabled dog and two supportive employees (Eric Christian Olsen and Noureen DeWulf), who don't seem to do more than smile indulgently and play the foil, much as Eve Arden did when movies about strong women in need of a stronger man starred Joan Crawford. Zoe also has a wise grandmother (Linda Lavin), who's good for some cutesy, gooey stuff at a retirement home. (Geezers say the darndest things.) But with her mother and father gone, Zoe also has abandonment issues.

The complication comes in the form of a sensitive yet strong interloper, Stan (Alex O'Loughlin), who's so perfect for Zoe that even his name rhymes with man. He makes farmstead goat cheese that he sells in the big city, where he takes Zoe to dinner in a paradisiacal garden on Avenue B. (He's a little bit country, a little bit soft, tinkling rock 'n' roll.) He even drives a tractor without his shirt (or a farmer's red neck), and talks thoughtfully about sustainable agriculture (really). He's so perfect that he's too perfect for Zoe, who pushes as he pulls, and pulls as he pushes, as they do the commitment tango. It's a tricky dance that becomes trickier as Zoe's belly swells and her emotions and hormones start crashing against her fears.

"The Back-Up Plan" is innocuous and unmemorable, and pretty much looks like a lot of sitcoms do. It will scale down well on your television, a medium that was made for close-ups of characters sharing and caring. With her sharply planed, mesmerizing face, Ms. Lopez was born for close-ups - though more beautiful, sumptuous ones than are found here. It's hard not to regret that this star hasn't been given a more luxurious setting for her big-screen return, something that made the most of her charm and talents and gave her more to do than make you smile (which you might do) and tear up (that too) as you marvel at the irresistible appeal of stories about people falling in love and of course at that sensational rear.

"The Back-Up Plan" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Make that a soft PG-13.

                       Four years ago, Jennifer Lopez needed a break from the movie business. And if we’re being completely honest, movie audiences needed a break from her. Passion projects like El Cantante and An Unfinished Life weren’t connecting to Lopez’s fan base. The experimental indie Bordertown  ran through the festival circuit before being dismissed to DVD shelves. The A-list star had lost her spark.

But it’s a recharged Lopez who returns from her brief hiatus with The Back-Up Plan, a likable but largely predictable comedy that still gets off a few quick and surprisingly accurate jabs at pregnancy, parenting, and dating in the modern age.

Zoe (Lopez) meets Stan (Alex O’Loughlin), the man of her dreams, on the day she’s artificially inseminated. They initially bicker over a taxi cab. Days later, they bump into each other at a neighborhood farmer’s market. Eventually they get around to going on a first date, which ends in disaster but has just enough highlights to get the two thinking about love.

Zoe convinces herself Stan can’t be “the one,” even though we’ve already figured out he is. Then, because she’d like the relationship to flourish, she convinces herself the artificial insemination didn’t take. Those prayers also go unanswered. Now the fledgling couple must contemplate becoming new (and terrified) parents, which elevates the relationship — as well as Alan Poul’s comedy — to another level.

Back-Up scripter Kate Angelo wrote for Will & Grace and The Bernie Mac Show, so she’s comfortable carving edges into her rom-com and future-mom clichés. Zoe joins a support group filled with eccentric single mothers, which builds to a manic (but undeniably funny) natural-birthing scene that involves an inflatable baby pool, a mirror, and a ceremonial drum. Anthony Anderson cameos as an overwhelmed dad of three who guides Stan through the highs and lows of parenting. The sentiments in these scenes aren’t new, but they’re delivered with humor and a welcome sincerity.

Poul peppers his supporting cast with familiar but long-forgotten television personalities. Happy Days patriarch Tom Bosley plays Arthur, a retirement community Don Juan who romances Zoe’s nana, played by Alice star Linda Lavin. (In a scene where Lavin drops an off-the-cuff “douchebag” while dissing Stan, a woman behind me in the theater chuckled and said, “That’s our Alice.” Decades later, Lavin is still connected to her past character.)

Lopez, on the other hand, wants to distance herself from her previous forgettable romantic comedies like Maid in Manhattan, The Wedding Planner, or Monster-In-Law. The actress is sweeter, warmer, and funnier than she’s been in years. Her Zoe comes off as accessible and kind, the type of character we want to see succeed. Lopez is also willing to embarrass herself for the benefit of a joke, whether she’s getting soaked with red wine or diving head first into a puddle of amniotic fluid.

Baseball players returning from rehab usually have to participate in a few minor league games. The slower pace allows muscle memory to return, and the player gradually retrieves his groove. For Lopez, Back-Up Plan feels like a start in the minors. She’s familiar with the steps necessary to complete the game, and she even rediscovers a few entertaining curveballs hiding up her sleeve. She’s getting her cinematic legs back. I expect her to be tossing fastballs in major league roles before long.

Critical reception

The film was met with generally negative reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reported that 21% of critics gave the film positive reviews based on 120 reviews with an average score of 3.7/10.Its consensus states “Jennifer Lopez is as appealing as ever, but The Back-Up Plan smothers its star with unrelatable characters and a predictable plot.”Another review aggretator, Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average from 0-100 on top reviews of mainstream critics, gave the film an average score of 34% based on 32 reviews.

Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review saying, “A winning performance by Jennifer Lopez overcomes a formulaic and predictable rom-com that involves a planned pregnancy.”The New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis wrote that the film is “not very good” and “bland”.Amy Biancolli of the San Francisco Chronicle praised the cast in her review writing “Lopez does a fine job mortifying herself in pursuit of physical humor, shifting her center of gravity in more ways than one. O’Loughlin, in the blander role, acts hurt or shocked or besotted where required, but the supporting players nearly steal the show.”Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert gave the film 1/4 stars, claiming the film “plays like an unendurable TV commercial about beautiful people with great lifestyles and not a thought in their empty little heads.”

Box office

The Back-Up Plan earned $4,200,000 at 3,280 theaters on its Friday début, making it number one at the box office.It dropped to #2 at the weekend box office with an estimated gross of $12,250,000, averaging $3,735 per theater.In its 2nd week it dropped to #4 with $7,3 million. In its 3rd week the film dropped to #5 grossing $5,033,471, averaging $1,676 per theater. The following week it dropped to #6 grossing an estimated $2,465,000, averaging $987 per theater.

As of June 21th it has grossed $70,417,518 world-wide, and is CBS Films’ highest-grossing film to date.

TV Land's new Betty White-assisted sitcom, Hot in Cleveland, continued to sizzle on Wednesday night.

The critically-acclaimed new sitcom pulled in nearly 3.4 million viewers in its second week, one week after its premiere episode locked in a record-setting 5 million viewers.

Hot in Cleveland revolves around three best friends from Los Angeles - novelist Melanie Moretti (Valerie Bertinelli), eye-brow archer to the stars Joy Scroggs (Jane Leeves) and former soap star Victoria Chase (Wendie Malick) who rent a house from feisty landlord (Betty White) and start a new life in Ohio.

Hot in Cleveland heats up the small screen Wednesday nights at 10PM on TV Land.

HelloMovies.com is a pretty neat community-based website that I’ve been playing around with. It’s a really smart and thorough aggregate system that allows you to search for movies based on “tastes,” genre, release date, language, awards, what your friends liked, and so on. It also calculates how many hours of movies you’ve seen and the percentage of which movies you liked, and which movies you might like based on your ratings. There’s a lot of user options — you can write reviews, link to your reviews on a different site, upload posters or trailers, and lots more. And, of course, you can earn points on a level system, which will eventually earn you free goodies.

One of its more interesting features is that you can browse movies that are already available, rate or add them, and then watch them immediately — for instance, the page for Dance of the Dead allows you to watch it for free on FEARnet, rent it from Netflix, or rent it from iTunes. It also pulls info from IMDb and links directly to that movie’s page, and has info on any award the movie’s won and so on. Naturally, it also can jack into your Facebook account (aka Skynet), and has some Facebook-like features like a “wall” for your buddies to post on.
Other sites have tried this; I’m still experimenting with Miso, although it doesn’t always have the option for the movie I’m watching and it’s pretty bare bones, minus the iPhone app and the foursquare-like badge system. Flixster is another option, of course, and it’s partnered with Rotten Tomatoes, which combines RT’s database of critic reviews with a robust website that offers both user-generated content, official movie content, applications for different types of smart phones, and the ability to buy tickets online or from your phone.

HelloMovies uses the Movie Genome Project, which is the same idea as Pandora’s Music Genome Project, both of which were inspired by the Human Genome Project. HelloMovies launched in 2009, but since then watching movies and TV shows online has become way more popular. It’s definitely something I will continue to play around with, although I am always wary of any site that uses user-generated content to boost its own offerings.

To my mind, that's a good news/ bad news situation. I'm completely happy seeing the Toy Story characters live on in short films through any distribution method (ie. Internet, Disney Channel, in front of theatrical releases). However, I'd be lying if I weren't simultaneously disappointed if this Toy Story short replaces the traditionally original short film Pixar delivers with its new feature films. That's not something I want to see stop. Toy Story is already incredibly established, it doesn't need to be in front of Cars 2 in order to justify its existence. And how does this news mesh with the assumption that freshly opened Pixar Vancouver (which we know is definitely working on Cars and Toy Story related projects) is doing the Toy Story shorts? If that's the case, what happens to the pattern of the theatrical shorts being chances for Pixar's feature staff to dabble in different and/or higher positions on a small-scale project?
   
   

   While I have faith that Cars 2 and Monsters, Inc 2 will have perfectly good stories and won't reek of cash-ins like the sequels certain other animated studios dish out every couple of years, it'd be nice to at least see original characters in short form before those features. I don't want to be too negative, nor too cynical about the ratio of sequels to new movies we're known to be getting from Pixar in the future (3:1) but it does concern me if we have to lose an original short film to get a Toy Story one in front of Cars 2. It just seems like the Toy Story shorts can stand on their own elsewhere, or help support other movies (like say, July 2011's Winnie the Pooh).

   With new 3D feature films being released on DVD every day, such as Alice and Wonderland, many are asking if these blockbusters are worth seeing again on 2D DVD and Blu-ray.

   
   

   With innovative plot twists, Tim Burton's new take on Lewis Carroll's novel has a star-studded cast which should see the film flying off retailer's shelves.

   
   

   But what remains in question is whether the visuals will be quite as spectacular when stripped of the third dimension.

   
   

   The 3D phenomenon has really boomed in the film industry recently and been bolstered by promotions from online DVD rental companies such as Lovefilm.

   
   

   From a rather tacky eighties joke, 3D titles now make their way on to billboards every week.

   
   

   It is rumoured that the sudden craze has been triggered by mounting film piracy.

   
   

   The stunning graphics of 3D films cannot be replicated through pirate DVDs or online streaming (some would argue they can't even be replicated with legitimate DVD rental discs) so many have been enticed back to the cinema.

   
   

   But with the titles now coming out on DVD, this brain-wave may well have backfired.

   
   

   Some are predicting that success of 2D releases will depend on movie genre.

   
   

   Action films are likely to not suffer massively.

   
   

   James Cameron's Avatar was a huge success, scooping up three Oscars and making record sales in box offices.

   
   

   Due to the generally stunning nature of the film, Blu-ray and DVD sales have also soared.

   
   

   Perhaps this is a flawed example as the film was such a success and other 3D action films such as Sanctum may not do quite as well.

   
   

   3D horror films on the other hand are likely to suffer very much from being sold in 2D.

   
   

   Whilst feature films such as My Bloody Valentine and Final Destination IV were successful due to their literally ‘in-your-face' gore, the main effectiveness will be lost in 2D.

   
   

   Piranha 3D and other 3D horror films which on their way could well suffer from the same problems.

   
   

   3D animation on the other hand is likely to do quite well on DVD.

   
   

   Pixar's first 3D release Up was very successful in theatres and its careful balance of beautiful visuals and moving storyline will have many keen to see it again, even in 2D.

   
   

   Toy Story 3 has been long-awaited by many Pixar fans.

   
   

   Many are expecting a masterpiece worthy of the Pixar team, to match titles such as Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo.

   
   

   It is likely that classics such as these are accessible to all, in every dimension.

   
   

   However, Ice Age 3D was conversely very reliant on the 3D visuals and it is doubtful whether this will appeal as much on 2D DVD and Blu-ray.

Because I know some people don't want to wait till Monday for the high-quality version (which I'll upload too) I uploaded this low-quality cam version. Star Trek is, as I said before,being directed by JJ Abrams who also directed MI:III, Cloverfield and produced such series as Lost and Alias. The movie features Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto as the old and young Spock. Chris Pine is Kirk.    In May, the first month of blockbuster summer movies, Hollywood brought out its big guns ? sequels to Iron Man, Shrek and Sex and the City, plus the pricey action-adventures Robin Hood and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ? and most of them turned out to be popguns. The month’s total take was 11% below May 2009’s in revenue and 19% down in attendance. Then last weekend, four more films opened: Get Him to the Greek, Killers, Marmaduke and Splice. They all “underperformed,” in industry parlance, marking the first June weekend in five years that no new movie earned $20 million at the box office. The weekend gross dropped a parlous 28% from the same frame last year, despite a hefty rise in ticket prices.

   
   

   All through the Great Recession, Hollywood enjoyed a relative boom. Last year the domestic box office ? the revenue from movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada ? exceeded $10 billion for the first time ever. Now the numbers look anorexic, big-budget films are flopping left and right, and studio bosses have begun wondering what has gone so horribly wrong. Is the recent downturn a blip in the business, or a harbinger of the end of America’s long love affair with paying to see picture shows? Have audiences suddenly decided, “Moviegoing ? that’s so 2009″? (See TIME’s 2010 Summer Entertainment Preview.)

   
   

   Ahh, 2009. Studio bosses stroke their three-day-bearded chins and sigh at the memory of that wonderful year. The summer season opened with a predictably profitable May menu of remakes (Star Trek), sequels (Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian), prequels (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Pixars (Up). Making money from familiar franchises is pleasing to Hollywood but not unexpected. Then, in early June, came the comedy smash The Hangover, which opened to $45 million and eventually took in $277 million on a $35 million budget. For the rest of 2009, the hits just kept on coming, often in surprise packages: a South African sci-fi parable (District 9), a strong-woman sports drama (The Blind Side) and an indie horror film (Paranormal Activity) that earned $150 million worldwide ? 10,000 times its $15,000 budget. All those pictures, plus Avatar.

   
   

   The gold rush continued through the first quarter of 2010, when James Cameron’s eco-epic racked up most of its $749 million domestic take, the highest in film history. As soon as the Avatar avalanche abated, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland stormed in and soon joined Avatar as one of just six films to have earned more than $1 billion worldwide; for the first time ever, two films had crossed that magic threshold in the same year. Industry swamis predicted that 2010 would top the record haul of 2009, figuring that 1) Avatar gave the new year a great head start and 2) the rest of the year would naturally produce the same number of hits.    Hasn’t happened so far. And June looks even worse than May, with only two inevitable hits ? Toy Story 3 and Twilight: Eclipse ? and a lot of romantic comedies and ’80s retreads. Nor does the rest of the summer look so rosy for the industry. Instead of a reliable blockbuster like Transformers for the Fourth of July, we have M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, another stab at movie-izing a kids’ TV show. Hollywood has learned the lesson that came too late to the wise guys on Wall Street: no industry is assured of ever rising profits. And at least for now, Hollywood has lost its audience-enticing mojo. Let’s see why.

   
   

   1. The Boom Wasn’t All That Boomy
   The five years from 2005 to 2009 showed remarkably consistent ticket sales, all in the range of 1.39 billion to 1.42 billion, according to movie-stats blog the Numbers. Indeed, in 2009 moviegoers bought no more tickets (1.42 billion) than they did in 1997; the 62% increase in box office revenue, from $6.51 billion to $10.65 billion, was entirely due to the gradual hike in prices. But the bust could be real: if current trends hold, the number of admissions this year will be 1.27 billion, the lowest since 1996. Historical note: None of the recent years comes anywhere near the 4 billion tickets sold in 1946, back before TV gave Americans a free, at-home option for watching entertainment. That’s three times the tickets, when the U.S. population was half what it is today. (Comment on this story.)

   
   

   2. It’s the Movies, Stupid
   In the 1940s, filmgoing was a habit; the average person went three times a week. Today it’s a habit for some ? the under-25s, which is why Hollywood aims its product at them ? but an event for most. The irregular attendee may scan the listings each week but won’t necessarily go see anything. To get beyond the core audience, the studios must create something that is either new or better, at least by the industry’s definition of quality. Who can explain why The Blind Side, the umpteenth sports-inspirational, or The Hangover, the 463rd rowdy-boys comedy, became such a megahit? Well, they did, and whatever that elusive essence, Hollywood hasn’t been able to bottle it this year.
